Oasis in the Sahara
My camel, we named him Muki. (and yes, I am standing in camel poop)
Algerian border in the back
Well deserved lunch in the oasis after riding the camels for a few hours.
Shakshuka - typical moroccan food
When we decided to go to Morocco, we really wanted to go in the desert as well. Because we had only five days and Merzouga is far away from Fez, we weren't sure we could make it. But kept our hopes high, and with loads of planning and sleepless nights, we managed to fulfill our dreams, to sleep in a one million star hotel, aka in the desert with nomad people. My photography skills are bad when it comes to shooting at night, so you just gotta use your imagination.
HOW TO GET THERE:
There are buses from both Fez and Marrakesh with Supratours directly to Merzouga, but because they were all full, we had to search for a different alternative. We called Mohamed from Moda Camp, and he arranged us taxi both ways. On our way there we had the most amazing driver, we had so much fun!
WHERE TO SLEEP:
A friend of mine suggested the Moda Camp because the prices are quite good. We arrived there late at night, we slept in the hotel for a few hours, then next day we were off with our camels to the camp, where we spend another night sleeping on mattresses under the starry sky.
WHAT TO SEE:
It's a one in a lifetime opportunity. Trust me. When we first arrived in the night, Mohamed waited for us with a Moroccan salad (onions and tomatoes), after what we went to the little dunes of the desert to enjoy a sisha and talk about stars and the berber lifestyle. I felt like I was in a painting. It's such a surreal feeling, no picture can imitate it. Also, the desert is the perfect place to disconnect from the world. No signal, no problems. You can meditate, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. Most people go there for a full week, to recharge and enjoy the simplicity and the yummy Moroccan food.
WHAT TO EAT:
Whichever camp you choose, they will make sure you will try out the best Moroccan foods, like tajine, couscous or the famous berber pizza.
This was probably the craziest and most fun adventure I had til now. If you followed along my journey (from Malaga - Tangier - Chefchaouen - Fes - Merzouga) you might have noticed that it was so hectic with loads of planning and bus problems. But in the end, it was a lifetime experience, and cannot wait to get back to Morocco to visit Marrakesh. I will advise anyone who wants to travel in Morocco to go with arranged tours, it will spare you the troubles we had daily with our transportation and safety.
PS: Let's talk about my outfit for a moment. It went so perfectly with the background and I didn't really plan it. I didn't know what kind of shoes I have to wear in the desert, I googled it and it said boots which I didn't have. But when we arrived, Mohamed told us that true berber people walk barefoot on the sand, so we decided to go with our sandals and take them off in the sand. My scarf was definitely way too hot for the weather but it looked so amazing with my trousers, don't you think?
I was wearing: C&A trousers, Zara crop top, Bershka sandals
Be sure to check out my vlog as well!
Hope you enjoyed my Moroccan experience!
xoxo,
Saci
